What is broadband?

If you're reading this guide, the chances are that you already have an Internet connection and want to upgrade, or you're setting up an Internet connection at home for the first time.

If you have an existing Internet connection, you probably connect to the Internet with a modem that plugs into your telephone line (often referred to as a "dial-up connection"). You really should upgrade to a Broadband internet connection.

If you're setting up an Internet connection for the first time, it really makes sense to get Broadband as the entry-level packages are generally better value than dial up.

How is broadband different?

Broadband is always connected and much faster than traditional dial up connections. Depending on what package you choose it still works through your standard phone line. It also allows you to make calls and be on the internet at the same time. You get charged a flat rate per month which differs from Dial Up where you usually get charged per minute spent online.

The main benefits are that you'll have a faster Internet connection that is always on, 24 hours a day. Normally you pay a flat monthly fee, no matter how often you use the Internet. Some providers have CAPS on the amount of data that can be transferred per month. You can check this when comparing providers on our site.

What will I be able to do with my broadband connection?

You'll be able to do things that weren't feasible with a dial-up connection. You'll be able to:

  • Listen to CD Quality Radio and Watch TV in realtime
  • Download huge amounts of music
  • Play online games
  • Log onto the office in realtime
  • Do everything the Internet offers with a modem, just much quicker!
